This publication was part of a project which explored family and heritage through my dad’s experiences as a chef and moving from China to New Zealand. Borrowing the idea of a memory palace from Kerry Ann Lee’s work, The Unavailable Memory of Gold Coin Café, I used the memory palace as an informal archive, collecting information through immigration documents, restaurant ephemera, recorded conversations with my dad. Golden Empire is the first of the project, documenting the process to get to Aotearoa and the first restaurant he worked after arriving.

This project was inspired by the instructional nature of Sol Lewitt’s Wall Drawings and the idea of teaching the user/viewer. Chinese characters are made up of strokes which have a particular position and order. I wanted to explore the formation and meaning of words through signs: language and image.

Cliffe, Sep.2021

Masthead Typography Project

Shapes are found in everyday objects around us. Cliffe is a typographic exploration started by retrieving discarded boxes from the recycling bin. I flatten out the box nets and extracted the shapes created by the folds.

Released to UNHRC, Jun.2021

205x292mm, 16 pages

Tracing paper 120gsm (cover), Kraft 80gsm

This publication is an exploration of images and text through three randomly assigned categories; earth, national and personal. By using the definition of national as a person belonging to a certain country, I related that to my own experience as a child of migrants, extended that to my mother’s own experience and even further to the collective experience of the Vietnamese refugee crisis.

Run Lola Run (again), Jun.2021

Rotoscope Animation

A redesign of a film opening title sequence exploring storytelling and motion graphic techniques. I chose Run Lola Run(1998), a German experimental thriller film, focusing on the idea of running in circles using objects from key moments in the film.
